Immigration Laws
The Chinese Exclusion act was created in 1882. This was during the time of a gold rush where many Chinese immigrants were coming to America to make a fortune. Many chinese immigrants were beaten for their race, and most Americans hated them because they were hired more often for jobs. Even non-miner Chinese were restricted, they were not allowed to reenter the country if they left, making it difficult to visit family and also to get their family into the US.
Now anyone can enter the US. The Diversity Visa Lottery lets immigrants into the US but countries with low immigration rates are most likely to get permission. There are now laws against one race, or one type of person entering the country. When people look to become citizens and live in the country for an extended time, they have to go through many steps to become citizens, such as a background test, and a general knowledge test about the US. The immigrants have to know more about how the US works than many natural born citizens know.
